The fountain of Diana and Actaeon is one of the wonders of the Royal Palace of Caserta.
The fountain is linked to a very interesting myth unknown to most. Totally immersed in greenery and located at the foot of the waterfall, it represents one of the most important artistic beauties of the Vanvitellian park.
The scene was created by Paolo Persico, Pietro Solari and Angelo Brunelli. The fountain shows Diana taking a bath in the company of her nymphs. Actaeon is discovered by the deity while spying on her nakedness. As punishment, the man undergoes the transformation into a deer and is condemned to be
torn to pieces by his own dogs.
The myth of Actaeon originates in Greek culture, according to which the young Actaeon, during a hunting trip, accidentally came across the cave where Diana and her companions were bathing. As soon as he noticed his presence, the goddess, angry at the outrage he had suffered, splashed water on his face, transforming him into a deer, thus preventing him from going to tell what she had seen. The hunter, running away, reached a source where, reflecting himself in the water, he noticed his new appearance. In the meantime he was chased by his own dogs who, having captured him, mauled him to pieces.
